We bought this microwave when our old one broke. We have limited counter space, so the size is perfect. We don't often use the preset times for defrosting/reheating, as they don't seem to work for the amount of food we put in (thus the reduction in stars). I bought this Microwave to replace an older Sharp model. I have had very good luck with Sharp Microwaves and this new one is no different. It's a very good compact microwave for one or two people. It was very easy to set the clock and use right out of the box. I love the look of it. The buttons are very simple to use. I don't use my microwave for cooking that much, I use it mostly for reheating and defrosting. I am a single mom with one teenage son who never eats at the same time as I do so it comes in very handy. I am not fond of this particular microwave because of the loud clunky sound of the door opening. Poor in my opinion. I can't believe that I will probably put up with this for years as I use my microwave several times a day. Power-level settings of 100%, 90%, and right on down--I am amazed. I think the very-low settings are for drying food; can you imagine being able to do dried foods yourself? Then quick-buttons for nearly everything. It'll take a while to learn all the features but even right out of the box it was just so easy to use! All I wanted was a small simple one that wouldn't take much counterspace and never dreamed it would have all this, not for this price. My old microwave had just given out--after 23 years of daily use--and the one thing I wanted was defrost, that's all. I'd always used the microwave, on defrost, to simmer foods that needs long, slow cooking--with no pot-watching and no chance of burning. You ought to try that! Much better than on the stove--and this does have defrost, of course of course--but so many other settings that will be even better for slow cooking. Then you can choose to defrost meat according to how much the chunk of meat actually weighs, of all things--there's a setting for that too! Never heard of that! One more feature I especially wanted was for the light to go out when the door is open and here's why: The way to make a microwave last simply forever is to leave the door open a while after each use and let it dry out. Then it will last for decades--like my old one did. But wouldn't want to leave it open if the light stayed on, no; so another highly desirable feature right there. I just don't think a better microwave could be bought at any price, period--many more features aren't even listed here. The more expensive ones seem to only have features I'd never use anyway--a built-in toaster or something--so why pay for that! No, if it's microwaving you're after, this is just IT. Also, if you're wondering about size, it says compact but holds a regular-size Pyrex loaf pan with room to spare as it turns, or a big mixing bowl with a pretty big hen or whatever in it, so that's plenty big for most people. It's the design--there are scooped-out places in the inner walls that allow space for the rim of a bowl or a pan to turn. That's why it holds so much. And hey, it looks nice too--and is light enough that I can easily move it to clean under it yet it does feel as heavy and solid as can be. My hat is certainly off to the designers! (And as always, to Amazon! It got here in no time with Amazon's free SuperSaver shipping--days before I was told it would arrive!) I don't have a single negative to say after a week's use and every day am still discovering yet more wonderful things about it that save a busy person's time and energy--as well as money. I'd like to point out that this review is by a mere man. And when it comes to things of the kitchen my opinion doesn't count for much. I thought this microwave oven was just fine. I threw away the packaging in a fit of tidiness and confidence. I tried it out. It worked. What could possibly be wrong? We have had it now for three weeks and my wife has not stopped complaining. I didn't know that one could get so worked up about a microwave oven.

True, without my glasses I can't see which button to press. Yes, it does take longer to cook anything than our last microwave oven. And when I stumble, bleary eyed, into the kitchen in the middle of the night I have no idea what time it is because the clock doesn't light up.

Surely, patience is a virtue. Do we need to be in so much of a rush? Does one minute here, or two minutes there really make much difference? I can live with it. My wife can't. I don't think I can send it back without packaging if you want to know the truth. We are now into week three of being owners of this appliance, and my wife has not exhausted her ire against it. I feel my resolve on hanging onto it weakening. Women (who have strong opinions about these things) usually know best. I expect we'll have to get a something else with more oomph. Then once again, domestic bliss will reign in the kitchen.

Chose this one specifically to fit on shelf above sink. But FIRST had to mount it on piece of 2x4 because when I installed new sink faucet the open microwave door hit it. THEN had to paint the edges of 2x4 black to blend in. NEXT had to make grooves for the microwave feet to "lock on" the 2x4. FINALLY had to put a small piece of non-skid material (had to cut it out from under my new carpet) so that the 2x4 stopped slipping every time I opened the microwave door. Because the buttons are difficult not only to locate but see, I had to install a spotlight on my ceiling. This helps greatly but of course it highlighted the dingy area behind the stove. Our microwave that we have had since 1992 finally quit working. It was a compact microwave, single analog timer, heavy and sturdy model that my grandmother bought me for college. It was a good microwave.

But I am married now and needed another compact microwave to replace the failed unit. My wife and I looked online and finally decided on the Sharp R-230KK 800-Watt. I ordered it, it arrived, unpacked it, and set it up.

This thing is light! I could easily pick it up and hold it in the air resting on the open palm of one hand. The sides of the microwave seem so thin. The lightest touch on the metal sides cause it to give in and out. There is a little paper styrofoam "filter" inside that my wife pulled off because it looked like cheap packaging material.

Sitting on the counter, it was impossible to open the door without pushing the thing across the counter. The back of the unit is not flat, it actually has a small middle section that sticks out much farther. This will cause a see-saw effect when you push the open button the the microwave when this middle section is resting on your back wall. There is no handle, so the only way to open the microwave is to push the button on the far right side of the microwave. This "button" is flush with rest of the surface and requires quite a bit of pressure before the mechanism is activated that swings the door open with surprising force. So you end up with one hand trying to brace the left side as you push hard on the button on the right side, all the while the microwave it teetering back and forth against the wall on it's middle pivot.

I won't go into the functionality of this unit. The construction, materials, and quality of this product are just too cheap. I'm sure the digital pad has all the timers, adjustments, and pointless settings that all the rest of microwaves have these days. Seriously, I miss the simple analog knob that I just twisted to the amount of time I wanted something to heat.

Needless to say, we sent this unit back to amazon (which I would like to say that amazon is the best online retailer I have ever dealt with as far as customer service is concerned!). We ended up purchasing a much better microwave, better quality, better power, better aesthetics, etc. and we have been perfectly happy with it for over a month now. This unit is the Emerson 0.9 cu. Ft. 900-watt Microwave Oven - Stainless Steel. Buy that one with confidence, or at least shop around for a better quality unit than this Sharp.

If you need a medium/compact microwave oven do yourself a favor
and buy this oven! Simply put, it works beautifully, does everything
you need, it is very reasonably priced and it looks great!
The only minor negative which I have seen posted (and which does have
some validity) is the fact that the Start and Stop buttons are more
or less hidden in the middle of all of the other buttons. Why Sharp
did this is beyond me because they simply could have made those two
buttons larger and more prominent. Even this can be remedied very
easily by pointing a small stcker toward each of the two buttons (as
I did.) With everything else this oven has going for it, this item
is not worth fussing about. Buy it and you will love it!

We needed a smaller microwave that sucked up less power otherwise we'd have to upgrade the electrical system in the kitchen. This does the trick. No more blown fuses and it gets the job done.
